The royal doll explained, “Despite your misgivings, we never force children to become what we wish.”
“You only trick them,” Caylee said.
Caylee is a young girl living in an extraordinary world of living dolls. There are varying kinds of dolls, from the elegant, porcelain royals to the rank and file, worker ragdolls. The ragdolls are responsible for menial work and also raising the little girls that live in this doll world.
Of all the children that ragdoll Mabel has ever raised, Caylee is the most difficult. She is headstrong and defiant. She is also gifted. Mabel does not know why, but she believes that Caylee is something special. If only she could be controlled and guided, then Caylee would be a rare treasure.
Caylee cares very little for the respect of the dolls. She has no choice but to live in their society, by their rule, but she has questions. Her doubts lead her to discoveries that would be impossible for most children. She learns things that no child is meant to learn. It sets her on a course of resistance. She determines to defy the will of the dolls. How can she though? She is only a single child, and they are the entire world. Their methods and wisdom span generations. Even against these impossible odds, Caylee will struggle to maintain her independent mind even if that struggle is futile.
